# David Fincher and Netflix partnership conclusion > Live situation record from CLSTR: https://clstr.news/situations/david-fincher-and-netflix-partnership-conclusion > Updated: 2026-10-01T22:30:00.000Z. Sources: 20. Developments: 2. Director David Fincher has decided not to renew his exclusive overall deal with Netflix, which is scheduled to expire in early 2027. This decision concludes a long-term creative partnership that began with ‘House of Cards’ in 2013 and included projects such as ‘Mank’ and ‘The Killer’. While Fincher may still collaborate with the platform on a project-by-project basis, he is not reportedly moving to a rival studio for a new exclusive arrangement. Fincher’s departure coincides with a broader strategic shift at Netflix. The company appears to be moving away from high-cost, prestige-focused partnerships with major filmmakers as it faces intense competition. This trend is reflected in other high-profile creators, such as the Duffer Brothers, Noah Baumbach, and Shawn Levy, also moving away from exclusive streaming deals. Reports suggest the split may be influenced by changes in Netflix’s leadership and a shift toward lower-budget films. Additionally, Fincher has expressed interest in more traditional theatrical releases, contrasting with the limited cinema runs typical of his recent Netflix productions. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-01: Netflix shifts strategy as David Fincher production deal ends Netflix is shifting its content strategy as its exclusive production deal with director David Fincher ends, following a trend of major creators moving to rival studios. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/netflix-shifts-strategy-as-david-fincher-production-deal-ends ### 2026-09-29: David Fincher to end exclusive Netflix deal in 2027 Director David Fincher will not renew his exclusive deal with Netflix when it expires in 2027, ending a 13-year partnership that helped define the streamer’s original content era. 17 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/david-fincher-to-end-exclusive-deal-with-netflix --- Cite as: David Fincher and Netflix partnership conclusion.
