Actor Da’Vinchi sparked a cultural debate following an appearance on the ‘Funky Friday’ podcast with Cam Newton. During the episode, the Haitian American actor suggested that some producers might favor overseas actors due to a perceived superior focus on work over celebrity status. He criticized current American culture for a lack of competence and work ethic, contrasting it with the determination instilled by his Haitian heritage.

Following these remarks, Da’Vinchi faced significant backlash. He was criticized for suggesting Black Americans have been ‘incompetent for a really long time’ and describing their work ethic as ‘very lazy and poor.’ Critics, including radio host Karen Hunter, pointed out that his career benefited from opportunities created by Black American entertainers. The controversy led to the advocacy group Freedmen Nation adding the actor to a boycott list, and reports indicated a loss of approximately 200,000 followers.

In late October, Da’Vinchi issued an apology during an appearance on The Breakfast Club. He admitted his choice of words was ‘clumsy’ and ‘too abrasive for such a nuanced conversation.’ He clarified that his remarks were intended as a broad critique of American culture and a growing dependence on technology, rather than a specific indictment of Black Americans, stating, ‘I should have definitely used different language.’
