The Bahía de Banderas International Day of the Dead Festival is scheduled for October 29 to November 2, 2026. Centered in Sayulita, the festivities will also include Bucerías, San Pancho, San Juan de Abajo, and Valle de Banderas in Nayarit.

The event seeks to support local economies and diversify tourism by merging cultural traditions with sports. A major component is the third Day of the Dead International Surf Tournament, running from October 29 to November 1, featuring multiple categories and a new category for dogs.

Cultural activities will include parades, music, gastronomy, catrina contests, and the creation of altars. As part of broader regional preparations for the holiday, the festival in Nayarit joins various other Mexican celebrations, such as merchant gatherings in Texcoco, festivals in Cozumel, and cultural events in Isla Mujeres, Tulum, and Mexico City.

Recent preparations highlight a wide range of regional activities across Mexico. In Cozumel, the ‘Tradition, Light, and Reunion’ festival will run from October 23 to 25 at the Museo de la Isla, honoring the Mayan tradition of Hanal Pixán with video mapping and a monumental altar. Other notable events include the Alfeñique Festival in Toluca and the opening of the Plaza de las Tradiciones in Texcoco.

Economic activity is also rising; Cuernavaca expects a 30 percent increase in local business sales, while producers in Atlixco and Ciudad Juárez are scaling up the cultivation of cempasúchil plants to meet seasonal demand.
