Tsar Boris III of Bulgaria died unexpectedly on August 28, 1943, at the age of 49 in his Sofia palace. While official medical reports attributed his death to heart and lung complications, historical debates persist regarding potential poisoning. Some theories suggest German, Soviet, or Italian involvement due to the Tsar’s refusal to send troops to the Eastern Front or to hand over Bulgarian Jews.

Prime Minister Bogdan Filov and other official reports from the time attributed the death to a blocked left coronary artery, double pneumonia, and edema of the lungs and brain. Following his death, a 40-day national period of mourning was declared, and his son, Prince Simeon, ascended to the throne as Tsar Simeon II under a regency.

After a funeral attended by large crowds, the Tsar was buried at the Rila Monastery, where his heart is interred. His remains had previously been held at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, where approximately 379,000 people paid their respects. Following the rise of the communist government after September 9, 1944, the Tsar’s tomb was desecrated and his remains were moved to Vrana; the current location of his bones remains unknown.
