James Copenhaver, a 76-year-old veteran, has died from complications related to injuries sustained during the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. Copenhaver was one of several spectators wounded when gunfire struck a campaign rally.

His injuries included gunshot wounds to the abdomen and left triceps, resulting in permanent nerve damage and a transection of his colon. He had lived for nearly two years with lingering complications, such as the need for a cane and bullet fragments remaining in his body. His death was confirmed by Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday and his family’s attorney.

Following his death, Donald Trump described Copenhaver as a “true American patriot.” Prior to his passing, Copenhaver and his wife had filed a lawsuit against the federal government, alleging that the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security failed to provide adequate security during the 2024 event.
