On August 22, while part of a hiking group, Dr. Bozhkova reportedly slipped on a steep path and fell approximately 50 meters, resulting in a fatal skull fracture.

Rescue efforts involved the Mountain Rescue Service and a military Cougar helicopter from the Krumovo airbase, as difficult terrain and weather prevented a medical helicopter from landing. 

Following the incident, the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the death. While initial reports questioned preparation, subsequent details highlighted that Dr. Bozhkova was an experienced mountaineer with significant international climbing achievements in Nepal, the Alps, Patagonia, and Bulgaria.
