Sajjan Kumar, a former three-time Member of Parliament for the Indian National Congress, died at age 80 while serving life sentences in Tihar Jail. Kumar had been a central figure in legal proceedings regarding the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. 

In 2018, the Delhi High Court convicted him for his role in the Palam Colony case, involving the murder of five Sikh men and the burning of a gurdwara. In February 2025, he received a second life sentence for the Saraswati Vihar case, which involved the deaths of Jaswant Singh and his son, Tarundeep Singh.

Following his death on August 20, the Delhi High Court closed an appeal filed by Kumar against his conviction in the Saraswati Vihar murder case.
