German character actor Michael Mendl has died at the age of 82. Initially reported as having passed away peacefully in early September, subsequent details from colleague Rüdiger Joswig revealed that Mendl actually died on July 31.

Mendl was a prominent figure in German film and television, appearing in over 200 productions. His notable roles included portraying Chancellor Willy Brandt in ‘Im Schatten der Macht’, Pope John Paul II in ‘Karol Wojtyla’, and General Helmuth Weidling in ‘Der Untergang’. He also gained recognition for his work in the Netflix series ‘Dark’.

Mendl had been open about his health struggles, including esophageal, colon, and bone cancer. Joswig noted that the actor had been living alone and had expressed feeling “very lonely.” In accordance with his wishes, Mendl was buried in a forest cemetery near Berlin.
