Veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Nortey, widely known as ‘Maame Gyata’ (Mother Lion), has passed away at the age of 89. Reports indicate she died at the University of Ghana Medical Centre.

Nortey was a prominent figure in Ghana’s film, television, and theatre industries for over five decades. Her career included roles in productions such as ‘Obra’, ‘Osofo Dadzie’, ‘Key Soap Concert Party’, ‘Thursday Theatre’, and ‘Sinking Sands’, as well as the Netflix production ‘Beasts of No Nation’. 

Following her death, her family requested privacy to mourn. Fellow actress Grace Omaboe, known as ‘Maame Dokono’, expressed grief over the loss of her longtime friend and colleague, describing Nortey as a supportive mentor within the industry. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
