Irish middle-distance runner and Olympian Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34 following a battle with stage four bowel cancer. 

Mageean, a former European 1500m champion and two-time Olympian, was diagnosed with the terminal illness in mid-2025. She spoke openly about her diagnosis and the emotional challenges of her prognosis in her memoir, “My Greatest Race”. 

She passed away on November 1, 2026, surrounded by her family after undergoing nearly 20 rounds of chemotherapy. Her death occurred shortly after her marriage to Thomas Moran in Belfast.
