British novelist and former Conservative politician Jeffrey Archer has died at the age of 86. Reports indicate he passed away at his London home on 5 October 2026, occurring “suddenly and peacefully” just one day before the scheduled worldwide publication of his final novel, ‘Adam and Eve’.

Archer’s career was defined by both immense commercial success and significant public scandal. As an author, he sold an estimated 300 million books in over 100 countries and 49 languages. He was the first writer to reach number one on the Sunday Times bestseller list in fiction, short stories, and non-fiction. His notable works include the ‘Clifton Chronicles’ and ‘Kane and Abel’.

In the political sphere, Archer served as a Member of Parliament and as Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party during Margaret Thatcher’s premiership. His political trajectory was notably impacted by a 2001 conviction for perjury and perverting the course of justice, which resulted in a prison sentence. Queen Camilla characterized him as an ‘irrepressible’ author and public figure.
