Derek Phillips, a 20-year-old third-year student and mellophone section leader for the University of Iowa marching band, died following a sudden cardiac arrest during the Hawkeyes' season-opening football game against Northern Illinois. The incident occurred amid high temperatures, with the heat index reaching at least 105 degrees.

After medical teams at the University of Iowa Hospital were unable to reverse severe brain damage, Phillips’ family made the “heartbreaking decision to remove life support.”

To honor Phillips, the Hawkeye Marching Band held a halftime tribute at Kinnick Stadium, where members spelled out “DEREK” on the field during the song “Rainbow Connection.” The band also observed a moment of silence, committed to wearing black pins throughout the season, and announced it will leave the H1 squad leader position empty for the remainder of the 2026 campaign. Other collegiate bands, including those from Iowa State and Western Michigan, have also offered tributes.
