The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, Gujarat, is expanding its infrastructure to focus on maritime decarbonization and green fuel production. In late September 2026, construction began on India’s first port-based e-methanol facility through a joint initiative with Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd. The Rs 2,300 crore project aims to produce green fuel using renewable power and biogenic CO2 to support the Asia-Europe International Trade Corridor.

By October 2026, the DPA reported reaching a milestone of 100 million tonnes of cargo throughput, achieving this volume ahead of previous fiscal schedules. To support its transition toward becoming a green fuel hub, the port hosted the Kandla Forum 2026, ‘Anchoring Maritime Decarbonisation’, to discuss investments in sustainable shipping. The port currently operates a 1 MW green hydrogen plant and has successfully completed India’s first methanol bunkering trial.
