An economic analysis by Koinon Consulting suggests that deep-sea mining is likely to result in financial losses rather than prosperity. The study, titled ‘Case Not Proven: The Economics of Deep-Sea Mining’, indicates that in 83% of realistic scenarios, the practice destroys value. It further projects a 61% probability that investors will fail to recover initial capital, contrasting with industry projections of multi-billion dollar gains.

Environmental research from the University of Liverpool has highlighted the long-term ecological impacts of such activities. Investigations into a 1979 test site in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone found that tracks from heavy machinery remain visible at depths of 4,800 meters, affecting vital food sources for seafloor organisms.

In addition to economic and ecological concerns, legal experts have raised issues regarding the sovereignty of Pacific Island nations. Concerns have been voiced that the leasing of seabed areas lacks accountability and ignores local autonomy. As of July, 46 countries have called for a moratorium or precautionary pause on commercial deep-sea mining to study these consequences.
