Research is investigating methods to mitigate the progression of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. One study from Emory University’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing suggests that high-dose vitamin D supplementation, specifically at least 5,000 IU daily, may be linked to improved cognition in adults showing early signs of decline. Participants in this study scored over 13 percent higher on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment compared to those not taking the supplement.

Additionally, scientists are exploring the use of aging dogs as natural models for neurodegenerative diseases. A study led by neurotoxicologist Julie Moreno at Colorado State University, published in npj Dementia, examined the brains of 24 dogs over the age of eight to evaluate canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD).

The analysis revealed that 100% of the dogs studied exhibited amyloid beta (Aβ) protein deposits in the neocortex, and 87.5% showed deposits in the hippocampus. These findings mirror early-stage changes seen in human Alzheimer’s disease, though the dogs did not exhibit the full neurofibrillary tangles or advanced neuritic plaques typically found in human patients.

Researchers noted that while mice are frequently used in laboratory settings, they do not naturally develop the protein buildup seen in dementia, which can lead to failed clinical trials. Because dogs naturally experience similar protein accumulation and cognitive decline, they may offer a more accurate biological model for developing future diagnostics and treatments.

## Timeline
