Archaeologists have identified significant Denisovan remains at Bianfu Cave in China’s Yunnan Province. The findings, published in the journal Nature, include teeth, skull fragments, and a partial arm bone dating to between 167,000 and 134,000 years ago. This discovery marks the first confirmed Denisovan site in southwest China.

Researchers utilized advanced proteomic analysis and ZooMS (zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry) to identify collagen markers from the genus Homo within over 60,000 bone fragments. The site is notable for its direct association between fossils and cultural artifacts, including more than 1,300 stone and bone tools, butchered animal remains, and fossilized pollen. These findings suggest the Denisovans possessed hunting and tool-making capabilities comparable to Neanderthals.
