Denmark is addressing electrical grid pressure through both household-level technological integration and large-scale infrastructure upgrades.

At the consumer level, industry organization Tekniq suggests that integrating household batteries, solar cells, heat pumps, and charging stations via intelligent management could help adapt consumption to grid loads. While 73 percent of surveyed installation companies report increased demand for these integrated solutions, industry representatives state that clearer economic incentives and reduced bureaucracy are needed to accelerate adoption.

On the regional level, the island of Bornholm is facing significant capacity challenges due to rising consumption and electrification. Energinet has identified the subsea cable to Sweden as a limiting factor for new large-scale consumers, such as potential hydrogen production and AI data centers. To manage this, TREFOR El-net Øst projects an investment of approximately 990.7 million DKK between 2027 and 2036 to upgrade voltage networks and transformer capacity, as electricity consumption in the area is expected to rise significantly by 2036.

Recent developments have highlighted planning errors regarding the Swedish subsea cable. While TREFOR El-Net Øst planned for a 57 MW capacity, it has been revealed that only 35 MW is guaranteed, with a technical maximum of approximately 45 MW. This shortfall is critical as Bornholm’s power demand is projected to reach 140 MW by 2030. Although the Bornholm Energy Island project aims to increase capacity by up to 200 MW, this solution is estimated to be roughly a decade away. While experts suggest existing battery solutions from EWII and planned facilities at Rønne Harbor could alleviate pressure, critics argue that Energinet has been slow to utilize these resources, favoring traditional investments in power lines and transformer stations instead.
