Rasmus Højlund has emerged as a central offensive leader for the Denmark national football team during the UEFA Nations League. Following a 1-0 victory against Wales, where Højlund scored a decisive penalty, coach Brian Riemer compared his importance to the squad to that of Erling Haaland for Norway.

Højlund has scored three goals in his last four international appearances. Amidst recent performances, including a 2-4 loss to Portugal, the striker addressed a physical confrontation with Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, describing it as a reaction to perceived unsportsmanlike behavior.
