In late July 2026 the Varde municipality and regional tourism board Visit Vesterhavet began distributing bilingual leaflets in Oksbøl, Blåvand, Vejers and nearby villages. Printed in Danish, German and English, the flyers advise tourists to stay calm, keep eye contact, stand still and, only as a last resort, use forceful deterrence such as shouting, clapping, waving arms, or striking with an object. Children under ten should be supervised, and photographing the animal is encouraged.

The guidance follows a rapid increase in the wolf population – 49 individuals recorded this year – and reports of young wolves showing reduced fear of humans. No attacks have been recorded, and officials stress that overall risk remains low.

After a wolf approached children in Nørre Nebel on 5 August, the Ministry of Nature and Animal Welfare established a new regulation zone from Nørre Nebel to Hvide Sande, allowing landowners and the Danish Nature Agency to obtain permits to shoot the problem animal. The zone links to an existing one near Oksbøl, and thermal drones and armed patrols have been deployed to monitor wolf movements. Earlier incidents, including a 14‑year‑old girl followed by a wolf in January and a wolf sighting on a golf course in July, prompted the expanded response.

Authorities continue to emphasize that wolf aggression toward humans is unlikely, while the new control measures aim to prevent further human‑wildlife interactions.
