# Sean Payton resumes Broncos play-calling duties > Live situation record from CLSTR: https://clstr.news/situations/denver-broncos-offensive-performance-scrutiny > Updated: 2026-10-10T11:00:00.000Z. Sources: 17. Developments: 6. The Denver Broncos offense continues to face scrutiny as the team holds a 3-2 record. Following early-season struggles, including a Week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, head coach Sean Payton officially announced he would resume offensive play-calling duties starting in Week 5. This decision followed reports that the shift from offensive coordinator Davis Webb was imminent. Webb expressed disappointment regarding the demotion but reaffirmed his commitment to the team, noting he had prepared for ‘various professional scenarios’ and remains in charge of offensive meetings and supporting the quarterback room. Payton’s decision aimed to rectify an erratic aerial attack, a lack of commitment to the running game, and general difficulty scoring points. In the subsequent matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Broncos secured a 23-17 victory. Despite the win, the offense remained inefficient, managing only 224 total yards and converting just one of 12 third-down attempts. The victory was largely driven by the Broncos' defense, aided by a late-game interception by safety Brandon Jones. The win also marked Payton’s first victory over Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh at SoFi Stadium. Quarterback Bo Nix remains a central figure in the team’s challenges. Despite being viewed as a franchise cornerstone, Nix has entered a performance slump, struggling with poise and decision-making while appearing ‘increasingly unsettled in the pocket.’ Conversely, the loss left the Chargers winless at 0-5, with quarterback Justin Herbert facing criticism following a difficult performance marked by one interception and five sacks. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-10: Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton to resume play-calling duties Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is reclaiming play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Davis Webb following a period of offensive struggles for the team. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/denver-broncos-coach-sean-payton-to-resume-play-calling-duties ### 2026-10-07: Sean Payton resumes play-calling duties for Denver Broncos Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is reclaiming offensive play-calling duties from coordinator Davis Webb to address the team's struggling offense ahead of their Week 5 matchup. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/sean-payton-expected-to-resume-play-calling-for-denver-broncos ### 2026-10-07: Denver Broncos face coaching and quarterback challenges The Denver Broncos face potential coaching shifts as Sean Payton may reclaim playcalling duties, alongside concerns regarding quarterback Bo Nix's recent performance slump. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/denver-broncos-face-coaching-and-quarterback-challenges ### 2026-09-28: Denver Broncos defend play calling after win over Rams Following a 30-26 win over the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton defended the team's short-yardage play calling as they navigate an early-season offensive adjustment period. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/denver-broncos-defend-play-calling-after-win-over-rams ### 2026-09-25: Denver Broncos offense faces scrutiny under Sean Payton Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton faces questions over offensive efficiency despite recent optimism regarding wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and future play designs. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/denver-broncos-offense-faces-scrutiny-under-sean-payton ### 2026-09-14: Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb faces scrutiny after loss to Chiefs Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb faced fan criticism following a 31-10 loss to the Chiefs, despite head coach Sean Payton's decision to delegate play-calling duties to him. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/denver-broncos-offensive-coordinator-davis-webb-faces-scrutiny-after-loss-to-chiefs --- Cite as: Sean Payton resumes Broncos play-calling duties.
