In late August 2026, Deportivo Toluca entered advanced negotiations to sell Brazilian winger Helinho to the Russian club CSKA Moscow for approximately $12 million. However, by late September 2026, the transfer rumors were resolved as Toluca officially renewed Helinho’s contract until 2029.

As the Liga MX Apertura tournament progresses, Toluca currently leads the standings with 19 points. The team enters Matchday 10 following a 3-2 loss to Santos Laguna. They are scheduled to face fourth-place Cruz Azul, who holds 15 points, at Estadio Banorte on Saturday, September 26, 2026. Cruz Azul seeks to close the four-point gap after a recent 1-0 defeat against Monterrey.

Both clubs face roster challenges due to FIFA international dates. Toluca will be without Jesús Gallardo, Everardo López, Federico Viñas, and Santiago Simón. Cruz Azul will be missing goalkeeper Kevin Mier, Érik Lira, and Jeremy Márquez, all of whom have been called up to their respective national teams.
