A new film adaptation of Theodor Storm’s 1888 novella, ‘Der Schimmelreiter’, is scheduled to premiere on the television channel ARTE. Directed by Francis Meletzky and written by Léonie-Claire Breinersdorfer, the production reimagines the classic story within a contemporary setting.

The drama focuses on the protagonist, Hauke Haien, who serves as a modern-day specialist in coastal defense and climate protection. Following the death of his father-in-law, Haien attempts to implement new strategies to combat the effects of climate change. While supported by his wife, Elke, Haien faces significant resistance from local villagers. His warnings regarding environmental threats are frequently dismissed as “hysteria” by those who prefer to maintain traditional methods, highlighting a conflict between visionary conservation plans and local social resistance.

Recent updates indicate the 96-minute film, starring Max Hubacher as Haien and Olga von Luckwald as Elke, is set to debut on the channel 3sat on November 20, 2026, before moving to ZDF.

The release is accompanied by various cultural events in Germany. A mystery musical production featuring life-sized horse puppets is scheduled to run at Theater Hameln from December 12, 2026, to January 3, 2027. Additionally, Museum Hameln will host a themed costume tour on October 30, focusing on historical superstitions and ghosts related to the story’s era.
