Researchers have developed new AI and predictive tools to assist in the management and assessment of diabetes risk.

Initially, researchers from the Technical University of Denmark and physician Umberto Maggiore introduced MEDWACS, an online AI-driven tool. Designed for home use, it estimates the risk of prediabetes and undiagnosed type 2 diabetes using seven personal data points, such as BMI, waist circumference, and thigh length. The tool was validated using data from the United States and South Korea.

Subsequently, researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine developed the Diabetes Complications Risk Calculator (DCRC). While the first tool focuses on initial risk assessment, the DCRC is designed for clinical settings to predict short-term risks for nine different acute and chronic complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and stroke, using data from routine medical care.
