Researchers and defense companies are developing non-destructive anti-drone technologies to secure critical infrastructure, airports, and urban areas.

At TU Wien, the NoctuaNet2 project, funded by a €200,000 SPRIND challenge grant, utilizes a modular ground sensor network and AI-driven visual detection. This system deploys high-speed autonomous interceptor drones to capture intruders mid-air using specialized nets rather than destroying them.

Additionally, VANEA Defence has introduced ATOMZA, a system for civilian operators. Instead of using communication jamming or GPS spoofing, ATOMZA employs optical disruption to blind a drone’s sensors, aiming to prevent navigation while minimizing the risk of falling debris in populated environments. The regulatory status of optical disruption for civilian use is currently awaiting verification.
