Researchers at Maynooth University have developed a Scaffolded DNA Computer (SDC) system, described as one of the most complex and fastest molecular computers reported to date. Published in the journal Nature, the study details a system that utilizes a long DNA strand as a scaffold with shorter strands that interact to perform computations.

Unlike traditional silicon-based technology, this computer operates without continuous electricity, instead utilizing molecular interactions in a water and salt solution triggered by heating and cooling cycles. The system reaches an equilibrium where the stable molecular structure represents the correct answer. The computing process occurs within a small droplet containing water, salt, and specifically designed DNA strands.

The system has successfully executed ten different programs, including 100-bit computations and addition involving numbers between 11 million and 34 million. It is also capable of performing multiplication and division. While slower than silicon-based computers, the device is noted for being robust, reusable for up to 25 consecutive calculations, and potentially useful for energy-efficient computation, long-term data storage, and molecular disease detection.
