Deepinder Goyal, founder of Zomato, is expanding his business focus toward experimental technology through the health-tech startup Temple. The company is developing a wearable device designed to monitor cerebral health by tracking real-time blood flow, oxygenation levels, cognitive load, and entropy using proprietary ‘BrainFlow’ technology.

Unlike traditional wrist-worn trackers, the compact, pill-shaped device is intended to be worn between the forehead and the ear using disposable tapes called ‘Grips’. While Goyal has shared a study comparing the device’s performance with time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (TD-NIRS), the research has not yet been peer-reviewed.

Following the launch of pre-orders on November 1, 2026, the device, priced at Rs 85,000, has faced scrutiny from medical professionals. Critics on social media have questioned its efficacy, alleging that it tracks facial blood flow via the superficial temporal artery rather than true brain flow. Experts also noted that the studies published on the company website were conducted by Temple itself and lack peer review.

Goyal has defended the venture, stating that Temple is a fitness tracker and wellness device, not a medical device, and noting it has not been clinically validated. He has personally invested USD 20 million into the project, with total company investment reaching USD 30 million. To address concerns, Goyal emphasized a 14-day, no-questions-asked return policy. The company plans to release pre-prints before pursuing peer-reviewed publications, with shipping expected to begin in early 2027.
