Cuban state media and leadership have highlighted new developments in radio programming. President Miguel Díaz-Canel announced the launch of ‘Criterio Compartido’ (Shared Criterion) on the state-run station Radio Rebelde. The program is intended to facilitate dialogue regarding national problems and public aspirations through citizen participation and expert involvement, occurring amidst a severe economic crisis.

The 45th Provincial Radio Festival in Bayamo, Granma province, recently concluded with an awards ceremony at the Plaza de la Patria. Dedicated to the centennial of Fidel Castro, the festival featured competitions in journalism, music, sports, and internet-based programming, alongside theoretical sessions on the challenges of radio propaganda and the use of artificial intelligence. 

Radio Granma secured the Grand Prize with the informative magazine ‘Radar MIL 590’. Other winners included Radio Bayamo, which received recognition for the testimonial series ‘Yo conocí a Fidel’, and Radio Portada de la Libertad for its public interest message ‘No a las drogas’. 

In addition to program competitions, the event included a ceremony to honor individual radio professionals. Notable distinctions included Abel Giraldo Guerrero Castro receiving the ‘Maestro de Radialistas 2026’ award, Jesús Rodríguez Román receiving the Commemorative Seal for the centenary of Cuban Radio, and Caridad Aguilar Rosabal being named ‘Artista Demérito’ by the Institute of Information and Social Communication.
