On October 19, 2026, two brothers, Joydeep Roy Choudhury and Shubhadeep Roy Choudhury, were found dead in the Baruakandi area of Dharmanagar, North Tripura. The victims' father filed a complaint alleging the deaths were linked to prior death threats and a financial dispute involving a local resident, Bijan Das.

Following the incident, a CPI(M) delegation visited the crime scene to demand a speedy investigation and increased police patrolling. Local unrest grew in response to the killings, with traders in Paschim Botorshi Bazar conducting a shop shutdown to protest and demand capital punishment for the perpetrator.

Police subsequently arrested Bijan Das, identified as the primary suspect in the hacking deaths. While Das has been produced before the North District Court, local residents and political opposition members continue to call for a thorough investigation to determine if a larger conspiracy or additional individuals were involved.
