Authorities in Brazil are investigating various criminal schemes involving digital platforms and instant bank transfers via Pix.

Initial reports focused on fraud cases in Paraná and Rio de Janeiro. These included an intermediary scam involving an online marketplace vehicle sale and a case of sentimental fraud where a suspect used a dating app to solicit money for a non-existent job.

Subsequent police operations in Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Goiás targeted more violent criminal activities. In Minas Gerais, suspects were arrested for robbing female passengers during ride-hailing trips using fraudulent profiles and physical threats. In another operation, individuals were apprehended for using dating and messaging apps to lure victims to specific locations, where they were subjected to physical aggression and intimidation to coerce bank transfers.

A joint operation by the Civil Police of Santa Catarina and São Paulo recently targeted a criminal organization suspected of generating approximately R$ 40 million through digital scams over a two-year period. The group allegedly used fraudulent websites designed to mimic legitimate auction platforms to deceive victims into paying for vehicles and other goods.

Investigators identified 114 police reports and approximately 2,700 virtual phone lines linked to the group. The investigation was catalyzed by a case involving an 80-year-old man who lost R$ 180,000 to scammers posing as bank employees. Law enforcement executed warrants across several locations, including Santo André, Poá, Embu das Artes, Planaltina, and Brasília, seizing cell phones, notebooks, and bank cards.
