A seasonal disease outbreak has caused a health crisis in the Baiga tribal regions of Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, specifically affecting villages in the Birsa area such as Korka, Bondari, Kundeksa, and Adori. Initial reports indicated that seven children between the ages of 4 and 10 died within a 25-day period, with approximately 45 children hospitalized for infections including malaria, diarrhea, typhoid, pneumonia, and skin infections.

As the situation progressed, the scale of the outbreak was reported to have increased. By mid-August, local administration reported that 117 children had been admitted to the Balaghat District Hospital, with 97 recovering and 20 remaining under treatment. Health officials deployed 20 survey teams to conduct door-to-door examinations, screening 2,220 individuals and identifying 519 total patients.

While officials maintained that current patients are in stable condition, political opposition has challenged the administration's figures, with the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Umang Singhar, alleging that nine children have died due to the outbreak.

To identify the exact cause of the illnesses, which include malaria, typhoid, measles, scabies, and nutritional deficiencies, medical officials have sent blood and water samples to the National Institute of Virology in Pune and an ICMR institution in Kolkata. The medical response currently includes 10 medical officers and four ambulances supporting the ongoing door-to-door screening efforts.
