Diwali, the Festival of Lights, continues to be observed through diverse traditions involving lamp lighting, home decorations, and spiritual reflection. Regional observances vary significantly, including Karthigai Deepam in Tamil Nadu, Kali Puja in West Bengal, and the Gujarati New Year.

As preparations for the 2026 season progress, specific customs for Dhanteras emphasize the auspicious purchase of a broom, which is viewed as a form of Goddess Lakshmi. Sumitacharya advises that brooms should be kept lying down toward the west to avoid domestic disputes, as upright placement is said to lead to broken relationships.

Home decoration and maintenance have become central to the festivities. Creative DIY methods include decorating clay diyas with mirrors or Kundan stones, using fresh flowers for floating displays, and creating intricate rangoli designs. To enhance aesthetics, suggestions include hanging fairy lights in zigzag or wave patterns and combining light strings with marigold flowers. For maintenance, it is recommended to use baking soda solutions or mild detergents to clean grime from light bulbs, ensuring power is off and glass is cool to prevent cracking.

In Medininagar, Palamu, retailers are offering premium decorative options, including antique pieces and fountains, approximately 95 percent of which are imported from Taiwan and Korea. Beyond aesthetics, the festival is increasingly associated with themes of environmental stewardship, such as tree planting and water conservation, as well as the promotion of renewable energy through solar technology.
