A nationwide system migration for Docomo Bike Share caused a widespread outage of its electric-bike rental service in Japan, beginning around July 29 and continuing through early August. The disruption, attributed to communication troubles and insufficient processing capacity in the new system during peak hours, affected multiple municipalities including Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, and Okayama.

Service restoration occurred in stages: Nara resumed on August 5, Hiroshima on August 7, and Okayama City’s ‘Mochamari’ service on August 10. While services gradually resumed across all areas by August 13, certain functions such as ‘1-day passes,’ ‘Convenience Store Passes,’ and some corporate memberships remained unavailable.

In response to the failure, the company pledged full refunds to individual and corporate members for rides paid for from August 1 onward, with no manual claim required. Monthly members will receive pro-rata refunds. These are expected to be processed sequentially starting in late August and completed by the end of September.

While the company initially intended to proceed with its rebranding to ‘NOLL’ on September 1, it has since announced a postponement of the brand renewal, the introduction of new vehicle models, and a new pricing structure. The company stated this decision was made to prioritize the stability of current services and customer support following the system failure. The new date for the transition remains undecided.
