Airline policies followed suit. After Bark Air introduced cabin travel for medium‑ and large‑size dogs, Italy’s ITA Airways launched a “Large Dog on Board” service on 3 August 2026. The add‑on permits dogs weighing 10–30 kg to travel in the passenger cabin on selected domestic flights from Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate, charging a €95 base fee plus the ticket price and allowing up to two dogs per aircraft—one 10‑15 kg and one 15‑30 kg. Dogs sit on a provided floor mat in front of a designated window seat; larger dogs occupy the front‑row left window seat on Airbus A220, A319 and A320, while smaller dogs use a rear‑row left window seat. Each animal must wear a muzzle, collar, leash and a crash‑tested harness that attaches to the seat belt. Routes include Palermo, Catania, Bari, Brindisi, Lamezia Terme, Reggio Calabria, Bologna, Genoa, Turin, Venice and Trieste. The rollout, approved by ENAC, is part of the Lufthansa Group’s effort to meet pet‑owner demand and may later extend to international routes.

The move contrasts with many European carriers that limit cabin pets to a combined weight of about 8 kg, and low‑cost airlines that ban pets altogether, suggesting ITA’s policy could influence broader airline practices.
