The DogeOS project, an application layer developed by the MyDoge wallet team, has launched a public testnet to introduce smart contract functionality to the Dogecoin ecosystem. Utilizing a zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup architecture, the project aims to provide Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility, allowing developers to build decentralized applications (dApps) such as lending protocols, stablecoins, and gaming platforms without altering the Dogecoin base ledger. While the initial testnet phase utilizes a permissioned sequencer and a security council, the long-term objective is to integrate directly with the Dogecoin network. This proposed integration involves a potential upgrade to Dogecoin Core, referred to as ‘OP_CHECKZKP’, which would allow miners to verify computations performed on the DogeOS layer. Founder Jordan Jefferson stated that providing functional utility is necessary to attract institutional interest, noting that demand for Dogecoin-based ETFs has been low.
