He revealed that after being diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2015, and facing reports that it had spread in 2020, a 2022 second opinion from oncologist Dr. Alexandra Drakaki at UCLA Health determined he had been misdiagnosed. Dr. Drakaki found that the cells exhibited mutations common in lung cancer rather than kidney cancer. 

Following a revised treatment plan, Lundgren announced in 2024 that he was cancer-free. The memoir also details the profound personal toll of his illness, including discussions with his brother, Johan, regarding assisted dying in Switzerland due to the physical toll of treatments. Since being declared cancer-free, Lundgren has returned to physical training and continues to promote his brand, Hard Cut Vodka, which he co-founded with his wife.
