Rapper Rick Ross, legally known as William Leonard Roberts II, has been arrested in Miami Beach facing one felony charge of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor battery charge. The charges stem from an alleged incident on August 28 at Ross’s Star Island residence.

According to police affidavits, the accuser—a woman who had been in a relationship with Ross for approximately one year—alleged that he became enraged over an Instagram photograph. She claimed he struck her multiple times, grabbed her by her ponytail, slammed her against a wall, and restricted her breathing by twisting the collar of her hoodie. The accuser provided photographic evidence of injuries, including a busted lip.

Ross has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and released after posting a total bond of $6,000 ($5,000 for the felony charge and $1,000 for the misdemeanor). A judge has issued a stay-away order, mandating that Ross maintain no contact with the accuser.

Defense attorneys Steve Sadow and Bradley Horenstein maintain that Ross is “wrongfully accused” and that the allegations are “totally fabricated.” The defense has also noted that the police report was not filed until nearly a month after the alleged incident. An arraignment is scheduled for October 22.
