During a Republican campaign rally in San Antonio, Texas, President Donald Trump announced his intention to award former Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Trump described Clemens as ‘maybe the greatest pitcher of all time’ and suggested the honor would serve as a high-level alternative to the Baseball Hall of Fame, where Clemens’ candidacy has been hindered by allegations of steroid use.

During the event, Trump claimed that Clemens had hit more opposing batters with pitches than any other pitcher in Major League Baseball history. Clemens, who was present at the rally, corrected the President on stage, stating, ‘I don’t think so, Mr. President.’ Clemens also expressed that he was ‘stunned’ by the announcement, noting that the civilian honor supersedes his professional playing achievements.

Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner and two-time World Series champion, has consistently denied allegations of performance-enhancing drug use throughout his 24-season career with teams including the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros. The President noted that the award ‘is a big step up from the Hall of Fame.’
