U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked international debate regarding lunar sovereignty after posting an AI-generated image of the Moon featuring a U.S. flag on Truth Social with the caption, ‘The Moon is ours’. 

While the social media activity has drawn scrutiny due to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty—which prohibits national appropriation of celestial bodies—the posts have also drawn comparisons to the ‘Star Wars empire’ following recent imagery of new U.S. Space Force uniforms. 

In response to the claims, Irish MMA fighter Conor McGregor posted on X that ‘The sun is Ireland’s!’, accompanied by an Irish flag.
