Following the offseason, Cleveland Cavaliers player Donovan Mitchell discussed the team’s roster developments, noting that a reunion with LeBron James ‘made sense’ and expressing surprise that James did not select the Philadelphia 76ers. The Cavaliers have since secured Mitchell with a four-year maximum extension and signed James Harden to a three-year deal. Mitchell has expanded his involvement with the Cleveland community by pledging support for local high school athletes, expressing a desire to ‘flip the script’ by providing visibility to youth athletes.

Mitchell has expressed a strong desire to spend his entire career with the franchise, stating he cannot picture himself wearing any other uniform. His ultimate objective is to deliver a championship and eventually see his number 45 retired in the Cavaliers' rafters.

As the 2026-27 NBA season begins, the Cavaliers’ season opener on October 22, 2026, resulted in a historic loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Despite a dominant first half where Cleveland led as much as 69-40, the 76ers overcame a 29-point deficit to win 114-106. The comeback represents the largest in Sixers play-by-play era history and the largest comeback in LeBron James’s career. Tyrese Maxey led the 76ers with 32 points, while Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown added 24 and 21 points, respectively. Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 32 points and 10 rebounds, while LeBron James recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds in his Philadelphia home debut.
