The Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) Granada Mollar de Elche celebrated its tenth anniversary with a series of events highlighting the pomegranate variety’s prestige and economic importance.

A gala titled ‘Diez años cultivando prestigio’ (Ten years cultivating prestige) was held at the Elche Congress Center to recognize farmers, companies, and institutions. During the ceremony, local chef Susi Díaz received an honorary distinction for her role as an ambassador in promoting the fruit’s gastronomic qualities. DOP President Francisco Oliva and Elche Agriculture Councilor José Antonio Román noted the event as a tribute to the collective effort of the agricultural community.

To further promote the fruit, the ‘Menjars de la Terra’ event was scheduled for October 19 to 23, involving five restaurants in the Baix Vinalopó region. Francisco Oliva emphasized that such local initiatives are essential for educating consumers about the fruit’s unique cultivation conditions.

The 2026/2027 season officially commenced with a symbolic opening ceremony at the Casa Gran d'Asprella estate in Las Bayas. Renowned chef Ferran Adrià served as the season's patron, describing the variety as “extraordinary.”

While industry experts project a total harvest of approximately 50,000 tons, officials have raised concerns regarding crop quality. It is estimated that roughly 15% of the volume may lack commercial viability due to ‘albardado’—sun damage to the fruit's skin caused by rising temperatures. Throughout these celebrations, regional officials have reiterated that water security remains vital for the sector, noting that maintaining the Tajo-Segura and Júcar-Vinalopó water transfers is essential to guarantee agricultural viability.
