Zoo Dortmund is facing public and expert scrutiny following the birth of twelve lion cubs to lionesses Zuri and Saba. The cubs, fathered by a male named Boeti, were born within a three-day period in late July and consist of eight males and four females.

While the zoo initially framed the births as a contribution to international species conservation, critics have challenged this, labeling the cubs “zoo hybrids” because the parents represent two different subspecies. Experts argue this makes the offspring largely irrelevant to formal genetically defined conservation programs. Although the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) had reportedly advised the zoo to limit or cease breeding, no formal ban was issued.

Marcel Stawinoga, the zoo’s communications manager and species conservation coordinator, addressed the debate, noting that the breeding decision was driven by the social needs of the pride rather than a direct contribution to formal EEP reintroduction goals, describing the conservation connection as ‘a bit constructed’. Due to enclosure size constraints, the zoo plans to transfer surplus animals to other facilities.
