Developments in drone detection technology are evolving in response to new security threats involving mobile networks.

Lockheed Martin, in collaboration with Verizon and Nvidia, demonstrated a capability to use existing 5G networks as radar systems. This ‘NetSense Airspace Awareness-as-a-Service’ utilizes radio frequency perturbations and AI to identify and track unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

Following an incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport where an explosive-laden drone was controlled via a commercial 4G mobile hotspot, security concerns have intensified. Because such methods allow remote control from any internet-connected location, traditional jamming is difficult. In response, Telekom is deploying passive radio frequency (RF) sensors to detect drones and their pilots by identifying electronic signals without disrupting mobile networks.
