The Karnataka government is moving toward a formal declaration of drought across 101 taluks. Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara indicated that the decision would follow a cabinet meeting after reviewing ground-truthing reports from 102 taluks.

Subsequent reports confirm that the state is set to declare 101 taluks as drought-hit due to a 30 per cent rainfall deficit recorded between June 1 and August 26. This shortage has resulted in falling groundwater levels, deficient soil moisture, and significant crop losses. Under the Centre’s Drought Manual, 2020, the state identified 134 taluks that experienced dry spells lasting more than three consecutive weeks.

The state has allocated Rs 635 crore for drought management. Once the declaration is finalized, conditions in the affected areas will be reviewed every 15 days. Additionally, the state has requested the central government to revise existing assessment criteria to better address regional needs.
