In late September 2026, two Dutch mayors announced their intentions to step down from their respective positions.

Kees van Rooij, the mayor of Meierijstad, announced he will depart in September 2027 after serving nine and a half years. He stated he wishes to pass on leadership before reaching age 70 to avoid a leadership search coinciding with municipal elections.

Mark Boumans, the mayor of Doetinchem, announced his departure to become the chairman of the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences in The Hague.
