The Netherlands features diverse natural landscapes and ecological sites ranging from coastal ecosystems to ancient forests and unique wetlands.

Coastal areas such as Egmond aan Zee support marine life through seaweed and shellfish, while wilderness areas like the island of Tiengemeten host Scottish Highland cattle and beavers. In Opsterland, conservation efforts include Species Management Plans to protect bat populations during home insulation projects. Inland regions include National Park De Meinweg and the Speulder- and Sprielderbos on the Veluwe, the latter known for its ‘dancing trees’. Additionally, the Schutterspark in South Limburg contains hanging fens influenced by mining history, while the Henschotermeer and Molenpas serve as notable recreational and man-made natural sites.

Recent restoration efforts have expanded to focus on habitat connectivity and biodiversity. In the Lemelerberg region, Stichting Landschap Overijssel has resumed work to strengthen the heathland landscape. As part of a project to meet Natura 2000 goals, approximately 40 hectares of forest will be phased into heathland between 2025 and 2028. This initiative aims to connect fragmented heathlands to facilitate the migration and reproduction of insects, reptiles, and butterflies. Monitoring has already indicated an increase in nightjar and woodlark territories in areas where forest was replaced by heath.
