In late July 2026 Ecuador’s tax authority (SRI) issued a resolution tightening invoicing rules for commercial road‑transport operators, limiting invoice issuance to authorized companies in order to curb tax evasion and informal competition. At the same time, the National Transit Agency (ANT) approved a 25 % increase in inter‑provincial bus fares, set to take effect on 1 August, with price hikes of up to $2 on routes such as Guayaquil‑Cuenca and Guayaquil‑Quito.

A few days later, ANT formalised the fare increase through Resolution No. 020‑DIR‑2026‑ANT, citing higher fuel, maintenance and parts costs. While municipal‑run buses in Quito were exempt, all other operators must adopt the new tariffs, with seniors, children and people with disabilities retaining a 50 % discount. The agency also announced inspections of bus fleets beginning 17 August. In Guayaquil, the urban fare remained unchanged at 30 centavos, and the local transport federation (Fetug) secured a monthly compensation of $1,134 per bus to offset operating expenses, conditional on passing the technical inspections.
