Research into electric vehicle (EV) charging has identified significant variations in energy efficiency depending on the charging method used. Studies by the German automobile club ADAC indicate that charging via standard household sockets results in the highest energy losses. Specific data shows the Mercedes CLA 350 EQ losing up to 24.2% of energy, while the VW ID.7 and Tesla Model Y experience losses between 12.7% and 15.3%. In contrast, using an 11kW or 22kW wallbox significantly improves efficiency, reducing losses to a range of 5.1% to 7.0%. ADAC concludes that household sockets are unsuitable for regular charging and should only be used as a backup. These discrepancies are largely attributed to the vehicle’s onboard charger, which converts alternating current to direct current.

Beyond efficiency, new research highlights factors affecting battery longevity. Investigations by RWTH Aachen and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center found that high ambient temperatures, particularly when combined with a high state of charge, can accelerate the aging of lithium-ion cells by increasing capacity loss and internal resistance.

Additionally, a study from Shanghai Dianji University regarding real-world data in Guangzhou indicates that driving style is a critical factor in degradation. Researchers found that aggressive driving—characterized by rapid acceleration and hard braking—can wear out a battery 2.5 times faster than smoother driving due to the high electrical loads placed on the cells.

Economic potential remains a key area of interest, with University of Delaware pilot projects demonstrating that vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology could allow owners to potentially earn up to $3,359 annually by feeding electricity back into the grid during peak demand.
