The European automotive market continues its shift toward electrification, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reaching a 21.7% cumulative market share in the EU between January and August. In Spain, pure electric car registrations reached a milestone in September, outnumbering diesel registrations by seven to one. Pure electric sales accounted for 18.5% of the monthly total (17,366 units), while diesel vehicles represented only 2.52% (2,363 units). Combined, pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for one in three cars sold, totaling 31,945 units—a 56% increase over the previous year.

This growth is largely attributed to the ‘Plan Auto+’, a 400-million-euro government incentive program. While the program has stimulated demand, Jaime Barea, president of Ganvam, has noted that current subsidies are lower relative to average vehicle prices than in previous plans. As of late 2026, approximately 71% of the 400-million-euro budget has been requested, but uncertainty persists because no funding has been approved for 2027, despite the program’s intended duration through 2030.

Industrially, the sector is seeing growth through international partnerships. In Aragon, a collaboration between Stellantis and Chinese manufacturer Leapmotor has generated roughly 200 million euros in the auxiliary industry, supporting nearly 1,000 jobs related to the production of the Leapmotor B10 model at the Figueruelas factory.

Despite these developments, a disparity remains between consumer segments. While 25% of private individuals have transitioned to zero-emission models, only 10% of companies have adopted electric vehicles, citing insufficient tax incentives for large fleets.
