A southern elephant seal pup, nicknamed Alfredito or Saturnino, was born on the beaches of Mar del Plata, Argentina, marking the first such birth in the area in over 30 years. The pup and its mother, Perla, have been monitored by specialists from the National University of Mar del Plata and CONICET. Experts reported that the calf successfully passed the critical first 72-hour window and has shown healthy weight gain through normal lactation.

As the situation progressed, a third juvenile elephant seal also arrived on the same beach. The presence of the animals led to the accelerated approval of a local ordinance in the General Pueyrredón district. This new regulation establishes sanctions for disturbing or harming wild animals and includes specific measures, such as requiring drones to maintain a minimum altitude of 150 meters to prevent animal stress.
