elka Holzwerke, a wood products enterprise founded in 1906, is undertaking a major modernization project at its Morbach site. Following its 120th anniversary, the company announced a high double-digit million euro investment, described as one of its largest single investments to date.

The project aims to overhaul particle board production and energy infrastructure by 2028. Key developments include the construction of a central biomass energy plant with nearly 20 megawatts of thermal capacity, a low-temperature dryer, and a new 165-meter forming and pressing line. 

Managing partner Karl-Robert Kuntz noted that the investment was driven by technology, permits, financing, and market conditions, stating that existing facilities no longer offered long-term economic viability. Completed stages of the modernization already include a new cutting center, a knife ring refiner, and updated sieving and gluing processes.
